Spring 2007

A very busy training season is winding down with only a few classes yet to occur. Seven members attended the Crane Class this year. Two members have taken and passed their written exams for the New York State Crane License already, and will take their practical exams this spring. I spoke with the crane licensing people in Albany and we may get the crane test back at our site this year.
 

The Operating Engineers were a big hit at the Hard Hat Expo again this year A couple of non-union operators have contacted us already about joining as a result of seeing who we are and what we do. Career days are cranking up. Volunteers are always needed at these events, and without your participation, it would be impossible to do them. It only takes a day of your time and everyone who has participated enjoys themselves. Apprentices, journeymen, and retirees are always welcome to help out. This training site functions best  when members participate,  just as the union itself works best when members participate. We will be hosting the VICA Championships here again this year, on April 19th, in which BOCES students from across the state compete
 .for a scholarship to Penn Tech Diesel College. On the same day, we will be participating in a Career Day at East Syracuse- Minoa High School. With the two events occurring on the same day, we will be in desperate need of assistance. The big Career Day in Ithaca takes place on May 1st this year, and I will hold a presentation at Central Square High School on May 10.

It looks like this will be another year of good employment for our members. Feel free to come by the site and
polish up your skills before the season gets underway. We are still doing CDL training on an as needed basis, when time allows, too. Have a good summer, and stop by or give a call when you have a minute.
