2      Following a very busy training season, the formal classes have slowed down, but there is still a lot of activity around the training site. Journeymen operators and apprentices are showing up and tweaking their skills on various pieces of equipment.

Special thanks to Brother Greg Maziarz president of Innovative GPS Solutions for the GPS class they provided. GPS operation is definitely becoming a big factor in our line of work. We need to be able to supply our contractors with GPS trained operators so they can stay competitive and we can stay employed.

We held apprentice recruitment on April 30th and the response was overwhelming. We have given the new apprentices their OSHA 10 and forklift training already. These people show a lot of promise and potential.

We were successful in having the NYS Crane test brought back to Constantia this year. Twelve members of Local 545 will take the practical exam on June 2nd. Many have been coming to the site to practice and have put the 30 ton Lorain to use. Thanks to George Boak, Bill Brazie, Tom Halstead, Greg Tucker, Al Reeves, and Roger Reeves for helping the members prepare for this.3

The Advanced Crane Safety Class continues to get bigger each year. This would not be possible without the signatory contractor’s donation of equipment and personnel. Thanks to Rig-All, MacGregor Crane, JPW, and Clark Rigging for their investment in the future.

The Career Days held at East Syracuse Minoa School and Tompkins Cortland Community College were well-attended this year. As usual, Local 545’s display was the hit of the show. Many thanks to all who helped to make these events happen. Have a safe and productive season.
